Are Evil Spirits Sent By God?
This is not exactly a story however it was something that I discovered a few days ago. I am a regular reader of the Holy Bible, however, I am not sure how I missed this.
There are various extracts in the Bible where it is clearly mentioned that God sent evil spirits down upon mankind to torment them. So , when we say that evil spirits come from the devil, what weight does that hold?
I have listed a few extracts below which clearly state that these spirits were sent down by God himself. Would love to get some input from experts in the field.
Judges 9 (New American Standard Bible)
23 - Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, 24so that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.
1 Kings 23 (King James Version)
23 - Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee.
1 Samuel 9 (King James Version)
9 - And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.
1 Samuel 18
10 - And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand.
There are various extracts like these where it clearly states that evils spirits were sent upon mankind by God Himself. I am a God fearing man and shudder at the thought of the idea. Is there an explanation to these extracts?Experts please comment and throw some light on this.
Interesting question and concept. Be interesting to get more views on this. I think it is possible that something may have been lost in translation. For instance it could be that he allowed evil spirits to torment man rather than deliberately sending them to do so.
